Unique coupon codes are the backbone of acquisition, win-back and partner campaigns. They are also the fastest way to overload a checkout if the redemption path is not designed for concurrency.
Start by separating generation from distribution. Pre-generate code pools asynchronously and store them with a campaign reference, then hand codes out through your CRM, ESP or partner feed. Generating on demand during checkout couples marketing throughput to conversion-critical latency.
Validate in two phases. A cheap format and existence check can run instantly on the client or the edge, while the authoritative redemption — the part that decrements the budget and locks the code — belongs in a single transactional call at order confirmation.
Set hard limits everywhere: per code, per customer, per campaign budget and per time window. Limits are far cheaper than reconciling a runaway promotion after the fact.
Finally, log every attempt, not just successes. Failed redemptions are the earliest signal of code leakage on a deal aggregator site.
